Illegal Immigrants

Have read that "Thousands march for immigrant rights in Los Angeles" and have also read that thousands of National Guard personal are going to be called for service in Iraq. I have an idea that sounds simple to me but I'm probably missing the big picture-but if you/they,the immigrants want the the rights or moreover the benefits of citizenship i.e.social security,health care etc...then why not make it a requirement that they EARN! said citizenship by serving a full tour, their choice, in the military?. As I said,I'm not really getting the whole picture but if you want something bad enough isn't it worth working (read earn) for?
